Arachne - The Ancient Greek Spider-Woman Surprisingly, the story of Arachne, with its very Greek themes of hubris and defiance of the gods followed by the inevitable comeuppance, is perhaps best preserved by the Latin poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses. Arachne was the daughter of a wool-dyer from Colophon, a town in the ancient land of Lydia. Endowed with a special gift for weaving, her tapestries were surpassed by no one, and it was such a pleasure to watch her weave that the nymphs came down from the forests and mountains to see Arachne at her loom.
